Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the current story.
The paywall would appear after you've read enough of the book to be able to decide if it was worth the $5/month or $30/year. I'd like to make my work free for everyone, but it takes me months to write, then edit, and the cover art usually costs in the range of $600. Needless to say, I'd like to be paid for my effort. The other time-consuming aspect of the process is posting each chapter separately on Substack. That took me a lot longer than I'd expected initially. Also, several of my novels have won prizes and are selling well and I'm reluctant to cut into that market. That's my reasoning behind the paywall idea.
Of course, I would opt for the free book, because I’m retire and on a tight budget, and basically a cheapskate but you shouldn’t sell yourself short. I have really enjoyed ‘The Time of the Cat’. I don’t exactly understand how the paywall works, but letting people sample your book before having to pay something-especially if they have already read one of your free books. I , myself, was a little nonplussed about ‘The Time of the Cat’ for the first two or three chapters, but then I really got into it. You’re doing great. Keep up the good work!
