Dear Reader:
We’re nearing the end of the first story. I’ve got to say that, considering the work involved, there has been little reward for me in terms of feedback. However, I’m willing to continue, provided I get some direction from you.
There are two more full books in The Gaia Ascendant series. The next is called “Second Wave” and it continues the story of Dec, Elizabeth, and Jefferson. It finds Dec going off-planet and meeting two other alien species that could be potential allies. The Pug-Bears are not finished and fully intend to subjugate the Earth and Dec desperately needs help.
I have a choice here. I can post “Second Wave” with no paywall or I could post one of my other books, but I need to insert a paywall at some point. I set my account up so that the subscription price is the minimum allowed by Substack - can’t get any less expensive.
Many of my other books are award-winners and are selling well. I could post one of them, but you’d have to pay at some point. I could give you my assurance that it would be worth it, but I think you’d have to make that decision for yourself.
So, here’s a poll asking what you would like. Comments are also solicited. The poll will be active for the next week only. If there is no clear-cut direction, I’ll have to assume that the 4th alternative is the correct one.
Joyce,
Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you're enjoying the current story.
The paywall would appear after you've read enough of the book to be able to decide if it was worth the $5/month or $30/year. I'd like to make my work free for everyone, but it takes me months to write, then edit, and the cover art usually costs in the range of $600. Needless to say, I'd like to be paid for my effort. The other time-consuming aspect of the process is posting each chapter separately on Substack. That took me a lot longer than I'd expected initially. Also, several of my novels have won prizes and are selling well and I'm reluctant to cut into that market. That's my reasoning behind the paywall idea.
Regards,
Eric
Of course, I would opt for the free book, because I’m retire and on a tight budget, and basically a cheapskate but you shouldn’t sell yourself short. I have really enjoyed ‘The Time of the Cat’. I don’t exactly understand how the paywall works, but letting people sample your book before having to pay something-especially if they have already read one of your free books. I , myself, was a little nonplussed about ‘The Time of the Cat’ for the first two or three chapters, but then I really got into it. You’re doing great. Keep up the good work!
