Here’s a promo in which I’m currently participating. While my Heart of Fire Time of Ice isn’t your normal historical romance, since it has a prehistorical setting and involves time travel, it was heavily researched and has an inadvertent romantic element.
I set out to write a time travel novel involving the last ice age, even going so far as to contact well-known Professor Fred Alan Wolf - physicist/author on his ideas about time travel. I researched the animals, the geologic time period, and the anthropological theories.
The Solutrean Theory, even though anthropologists claim to have evidence that it is incorrect (weak evidence IMO), provided a source for my Clovis-culture paleolithic character. The rapid climate change that was the main feature of the Younger Dryas Period provided a reason for him to wander far to the west
. The potential inter-tribal conflict between his people and the earlier arriving tribes who crossed the Bering Strait gave me a reason for him to be alone and essentially seeking death.
I like to write characters who have serious attitudinal problems, who are damned by their own minds, but who stumble along a path that finally shows them a way out. Kathleen is a graduate physics student who is emotionally crippled and physically scarred by her past. She is probably the least likely person to be able to survive in a primitive land.
Her physics research ends with her being transported to the Pleistocene. It’s cold and, what’s worse, she has no memory of how to use her equation to return to the present.
When the lone hunter discovers her in a tree trying to avoid being eaten by a saber-tooth cat, she has no alternative but to learn how to trust another human, something she has great difficulty doing.
The story was going along fine for me, but then the two of them insisted on falling in love, hence the romantic part. I may be crazy, but I know my characters are well-developed when they start telling me what they are going to do, despite my plans for them to do something else.
If you decide to read Heart of Fire Time of Ice, it is the first of a series of five novels and it is my most popular story. It’s only $0.99 on Kindle and other online stores. I think you’ll enjoy it. It’s got enough romance to keep romance addicts happy and enough action and bloodshed to keep those with an adventurous spirit turning the pages.
Please look over the promo and check on the offered books, you might find a great Autumn read.
Namaste,
Eric
